2010 WSOP – the media list

May 30, 2010
Filed under: poker — bcd @ 9:22 am

in my fortieth year on this planet i am supposed to be playing in the World Series of Poker 2010. alas, i have been unable to secure an affordable seat.

nonetheless, this year, as for the last seven years, i will be following the WSOP on the web. the good news is that every year the group of journalists providing the daily minutia from the WSOP gets bigger and better.

here’s a quick list of who i’ll be reading:

i don’t know who i found first, but i am pretty sure i found both from The Blogfather. Sir Al is now working for Full Tilt Poker and the Good Dr. Pauly has a book coming out soon. both are required reading for any WSOP year.

Al Can’t Hang: blog & twitter

Tao of Pauly: blog & twitter

another poker journo that i mysteriously found is Dan at Pokerati. i think i got there b/c Michelle Lewis‘ neighbor is my mom’s cardiologist and Michelle linked to Dan oh so many years ago when he was still in Dallas. i think.

Pokerati: blog & twitter

F-Train came from reading Dr. Pauly and Al Can’t Hang. he is another dengen convert, giving up i think a job in the world’s second oldest profession and traveling the world for poker.

F-Train: blog & twitter

Pot Committed is Dr. Pauly’s common-law better half. don’t let that fool you, she’s been covering poker for years and in the last year went global with her coverage of the Latin American Poker Tour.

Pot Committed: blog & twitter

so quit hanging around here and go catch-up on the action!

just a quick post to say thank you to Full Tilt Poker for the Battle of the Blogger Tournaments 5 – it was a great series that culminates tonight at 9PM CST with three (yes three!!) WSOP Main Event seats being awarded!

also a big thanks to Full Tilt Poker for hiring and keeping Sir Al Can’t Hang busy. i am sure they recognize that he is a unique and awesome spokesman for those of us who love the game of poker.

and my personal thanks to Al for another great series with another amazing round of prizes. it has to be tough to outdo each time, because you keep raising the bar!

so – how did i do? with a lot of luck and a little rustiness, i was able to place second twice. while that doesn’t get me a seat in the The Battle of the Blogger 5 Tournament of Champions, i am happy that i was finally able to show a little improvement. heck, over the course of all five BBTs, i might even be even now!

OK, i know, that’s bullshiet…but it sounds good!

good luck to all the bloggers in the ToC and good luck to the eventual winners who will be heading to Vegas to play in the WSOP. maybe this will be the year for a blogger at the final table and/or a blogger winner!

dream big!

Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days!

i had to add a new 2 TB HDD for my iTunes library (yes, it is getting out of control) which meant some moving around and cleaning up.

i went through my back-up HDD and discovered an assload of old poker screen shots.

here’s a great one!

those were the days….

it’s back – the BBT5! bigger, badder, better than evar!

My Mama always said you’ve got to put the past behind you before you can move on – Forrest Gump

i’ve come to a realization over the last 10-12 years; if you had asked me about decisions i made when i was in my 20s, i would have argued till i was blue in the face about how correct/right i was.  even in the face of being wrong.  ah, youth.

but roughly around my 30s (and especially after my wife and i launched our own business) i realized that i often get everything wrong the first time.  i then “learn” and hopefully don’t make the same mistake twice.  i wish i could say i was smart enough not to make the initial error/problem, but i am not.  i learn a lot by doing and in doing i am really good at screwing shiet up!

last night’s poker game was The Mookie.  after my deep run in the $200K Stimulus Qualifier (120/~8300) i was hoping my new found patience would pay off.  i only needed to suckout once to make the final table – that in and of itself might be a record for me!  i also had very few big pairs – never had aces or king the whole night.  but i managed to make it down heads up.  and then i fscked up.

i offered a deal without really understanding how i needed to make the outcome happen once the deal was stuck.  not smart.

ShipFaced12 and i were heads up and he already has won a seat to the Blogger Championship, so i offered cash to let me take the seat.  he agreed since you can’t really use two seats (yes, yes, i know that by winning more than one he limits the competition).  then, i assumed we would just shove match it and Al could move the seat to my name.

actually what we should have done was have ShipFaced12 sit out, let me blind him off and win the tourney (and the seat) and then i could ship him the agreed upon payment.  why this didn’t occur to me, no clue.  i am not arguing that i am a smart man.

anyway, what actually happened was ShipFaced12 won the tourney, which means he won the seat.  and i got 2nd.  doh!

so just like in all things i do, i learned the proper way to negotiate a winner-take-all tourney on Full Tilt.  too bad i had to miss the chance to win the seat to the Blogger Championship.

there is a silver lining; two actually!  one, the Blogger series isn’t done.  so maybe my form (and luck) will hold and i can get another chance.  and number two?  the 2nd place prize money from last night is going to be combined with some ancient $T and buy me into the 150 Seat Main Event Guarantee!

putting the past behind me and moving on – one mistake at a time!

you don’t read WCP?  what, you don’t like girls or poker? most of the images are even safe for work…i think.

hope to make it home tonight in time to see you there!

The 7 Habits of the Highly Ineffective Me

the six week Batan march of death has started and Las Vegas is crawling with card players all lusting for money and jewelery.  as i keep grinding the Poker Stars Steps in search of a seat, here are the sites i am checking that help me keep abreast of what is happening:

that’s what keeps me busy…back to the grind.

poker penalty box and Every Hand Revealed

well, i couldn’t even handle my own self-imposed exile from poker.  sure i made it through Friday night, but i got up this AM and decided to start my Steps again.  after getting shot back down to Step 2 i would have to wade my way through.

to get to five handed, i got it AIPF with sevens vs tens.  allah smiled and i flopped a set.

to get to four handed, i snapped off aces with JKs, turning trips.

to get to three handed, i snapped off aces with QTo, making a straight.  this was blind v blind and AIPF.

i then held on to win my Step 3 ticket when Q8o finally took out the blinded down A5o.

so, i played pretty poor.  got really, really lucky.  won my ticket.

last night i finished Every Hand Revealed and Hats & Eyeglasses.  i was impressed with Hats & Eyeglasses, a memior of a Hollywood fluff writer who grew up in New York.  some great poker stories in here and her description of getting hooked on Paradise Poker is pretty funny; at least she was able to beat the sickness!

Hansen’s book was O.K.  you really have to parse all the hands to get to the meat, which are some gems of how Gus thinks and his method to dissecting hands.  one thing for sure, Gus ran over his tables; no one put up a fight and he stole his way down to the final three.  Jimmy Fricke tried to answer some questions about the hands on 2+2 before some tard ran him off.  but Jimmy’s contention that all Gus looks at is pot odds is kinda true.  but then again, why would Gus look at anything else when no one was standing up to him?  Jimmy made some big pot errors to Gus, but when you look at the hands that Jimmy had to lay down to Gus’ aggression, i would assume he was pretty frustrated.  either way, it is a cheap book and worth some time.  someone on 2+2 suggested it should have been packed with the video of the tournament, which would have been cool.  you can go to PokerTube and watch a lot of it.
